The mechanisms by which oxygen acts as a surfactant in giant magnetoresistance multilayers have been elucidated for the first time. Three-dimensional atom probe analysis of Cu/CoFe multilayers reveals the elemental distributions at the atomic level.

Hard carbon films can be prepared by the condensation of energetic carbon species at and below room temperature. These hydrogen-free films are primarily tetrahedrally coordinated and contain high fractions of sp3 bonding. Field emission from these an

In this study, the electron affinity and Schottky barrier height of thin Cu and Zr films on diamond (100) substrates were correlated by means of UV photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) measurements. Prior to metal deposition the diamond crystals were cle

The homogeneity and size of radio-frequency and microwave-driven plasmas are often limited by insufficient penetration of the electromagnetic radiation. To investigate increasing the skin depth of the radiation, the authors consider the propagation o

The stresses in sputter-deposited, NiMn- and PtMn-pinned top spin valve multilayers were measured using a laser-based wafer curvature technique. As-deposited stresses were 150 to 180 MPa in compression for NiMn- and 970 to 1020 MPa in compression for

Thin Zr films were deposited on natural single crystal diamond (100) substrates by ebeam evaporation in ultra-high vacuum (UHV). Before metal deposition the surfaces were cleaned by UHV anneals at either 500°C or 1150°C. Following either one of the
