Abstract Ireland has > 50% of the EU’s ocean-raised bogs; however, degradation through land-use activities has transformed them from carbon (C) sinks to sources. Given their significant role in climate mitigation, it is essential to quantify the em

Abstract Wetlands are one of the major contributors of methane (CH4) emissions to the atmosphere and the intensity of emissions is driven by local environmental variables and spatial heterogeneity. Peatlands are a major wetland class and there are nu

Peatlands store up to 2320 Mt of carbon (C) on only ~20% of the land area in Ireland; however, approximately 90% of this area has been drained and is emitting up to 10 Mt C per year. Gross primary productivity (GPP) is a one of the key components of

Worldwide, peatlands are estimated to store around 30% of soil organic carbon on only 3% of the land area. In Ireland, these numbers increase with peatlands covering ~20% of the land area and storing up to 75% of the terrestrial soil organic carbon.

Peatland ecosystems are integral to the mitigation of climate change as they represent significant terrestrial carbon sinks. In Ireland, peatlands cover ~20% of the land area but hold up to 75% of the soil organic carbon stock however many of these e

Peatlands are vital to the global carbon (C) cycle as they act as a significant C store and these systems in Ireland store between 1064 –1503 Gt C on ~20% of the land area. However, around 90% of this area has been drained and degraded by various a
