In this book chapter we describe the {\em Lagrangian} numerical relativity code \sphi. This code evolves spacetimes in full General Relativity by integrating the BSSN equations on structured meshes with a simple dynamical mesh refinement strategy. Th

Neutron star (NS) mergers where both stars have negligible spins are commonly considered as the most likely ``standard'' case. In globular clusters, however, the majority of NSs have been spun up to millisecond (ms) periods and, based on observed sys

Observations of compact objects in Galactic binaries have provided tentative evidence of a dearth of masses in the so-called lower mass gap $\sim2.2-5$ M$_\odot$. Nevertheless, two such objects have been discovered in gravitational-wave data from LIG

Neutron star mergers have been proposed as the main source of heavy $r$-process nucleosynthesis in the Universe. However, the mergers' significant expected delay after binary formation is in tension with observed very early $r$-process enrichment, e.

Compact binary mergers involving neutron stars can eject a fraction of their mass to space. Being extremely neutron rich, this material undergoes rapid neutron capture nucleosynthesis, and the resulting radioactivity powers fast, short-lived electrom

To date, essentially all simulation codes that solve the full set of Einstein's equations are performed in the framework of Eulerian hydrodynamics. The exception is our recently developed Numerical Relativity code SPHINCS_BSSN which solves the common

We present the first neutron star merger simulations performed with the newly developed Numerical Relativity code SPHINCS_BSSN. This code evolves the spacetime on a mesh using the BSSN formulation, but matter is evolved via Lagrangian particles accor

We present a new methodology for simulating self-gravitating general-relativistic fluids. In our approach the fluid is modelled by means of Lagrangian particles in the framework of a general-relativistic (GR) Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) formu

On 2019 August 14, the LIGO and Virgo interferometers detected a high-significance event labelled S190814bv. Preliminary analysis of the GW data suggests that the event was likely due to the merger of a compact binary system formed by a BH and a NS.

We present X-ray and optical observations of the short duration gamma-ray burst GRB 071227 and its host at $z=0.381$, obtained using \textit{Swift}, Gemini South and the Very Large Telescope. We identify a short-lived and moderately bright optical tr
