Abstract Unrest began in July 2021 at Askja volcano in the Northern Volcanic Zone (NVZ) of Iceland. Its most recent eruption, in 1961, was predominantly effusive and produced ∼0.1 km3 lava field. The last plinian eruption at Askja occurred in 1875.

Abstract Surface deformation plays a key role in illuminating magma transport at active volcanoes, however, unambiguous separation of deep and shallow transport remains elusive. The Socorro Magma Body (SMB) lacks an upper crustal magma transport syst

Large-volume volcanic eruptions can occur despite only limited precursory activity. Here the authors show that modelling the combined effects of buoyant magma, viscoelastic earth behaviour, and sustained magma channels can explain such behaviour of v

In August 2021, Askja volcano in Iceland experienced a sudden onset of rapid uplift that followed decades of continuous subsidence. We review the extensive microgravity record from Askja, revisiting data recorded between 1988 and 2017, and presenting

Precursors to volcanic eruptions vary widely between volcanic systems and their individual eruptions. Volcanic systems in Iceland undergoing unrest include the Reykjanes, Svartsengi, Fagradalsfjall, and Krísuvík systems on the obliquely spreading R

Earthquake magnitude estimation using peak ground velocities (PGVs) derived from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) data has shown promise for rapid characterization of damaging earthquakes. Here, we examine the feasibility of using GNSS-deri
