Here the authors identify two zinc/cobalt responsive proteins (ZCRPs) in marine diatoms, determining their functional roles in trace metal transport and homeostasis, as well as their application as an indicator of oceanic Zn stress.

Cobalt (Co) is a scarce but essential micronutrient for marine plankton in the Southern Ocean and coastal Antarctic seas where dissolved cobalt (dCo) concentrations can be extremely low. This study presents total dCo and labile dCo distributions meas

Scarce dissolved surface ocean concentrations of the essential algal micronutrient zinc suggest that Zn may influence the growth of phytoplankton such as diatoms, which are major contributors to marine primary productivity. However, the specific mech

Cyanobacteria of the genus Trichodesmium provide about 80 Tg of fixed nitrogen to the surface ocean per year and contribute to marine biogeochemistry, including the sequestration of carbon dioxide. Trichodesmium fixes nitrogen in the daylight, despit
