Abstract Deterministic sources of quantum light (i.e. single photons or pairs of entangled photons) are required for a whole host of applications in quantum technology, including quantum imaging, quantum cryptography and the long-distance transfer of

Femtosecond pulse shaping provides a means to tailor the interaction of light with matter, enabling the optimization of optical control processes and the achievement of a target final quantum state of the matter system. While this approach has found

A square lattice of shallow, noncylindrical holes in GaAs is shown to act as a phononic crystal (PnC) reflector. The holes are produced by wet-etching a GaAs substrate using a citric acid:H2O2 etching procedure and a photolithographed array pattern.

Pulse shaping techniques are used to demonstrate quantum control of exciton qubits in InAs quantum dots. Linearly chirped laser pulses are used to demonstrate adiabatic rapid passage in a single quantum dot on a subpicosecond timescale. The observed

We demonstrate adiabatic rapid passage on a subpicosecond time scale in a single semiconductor quantum dot, enabling the exploration of a regime of strong (and rapidly varying) Rabi energies for optical control of excitons. An observed dependence of

Robust excitation of an exciton state via adiabatic rapid passage is demonstrated in a single InGaAs quantum dot using subpicosecond optical pulses. A chirp sign dependence of the transfer efficiency indicates dephasing tied to phonons.

The application of femtosecond four-wave mixing to the study of fundamental properties of diluted magnetic semiconductors ((s,p)-d hybridization, spin-flip scattering) is described, using experiments on GaMnAs as a prototype III-Mn-V system. Spectral

Four-wave mixing techniques are applied to Ga1-xMnxAs, providing new insight into the fundamental properties of the III-Mn-V semiconductors. Clear signatures of (s,p)-d hybridization associated with the MnGa substitutional impurity are observed in th

In optimal quantum control (OQC), a target quantum state of matter is achieved by tailoring the phase and amplitude of the control Hamiltonian through femtosecond pulse-shaping techniques and powerful adaptive feedback algorithms. Motivated by recent
