Nonuniform spatial distributions of vegetation in scarce environments consist of either gaps, bands often called tiger bush or patches that can be either self-organized or spatially localized in space. When the level of aridity is increased, the unif

The theory of vegetation patterns presented rests on two hypotheses: (i) the self-organization hypothesis that attributes their cause to interactions intrinsic to vegetation dynamics; (ii) the complementary self-assembly hypothesis that attributes th

Desertification due to climate change and increasing drought periods is a worldwide problem for both ecology and economy. Our ability to understand how vegetation manages to survive and propagate through arid and semiarid ecosystems may be useful in

Macroscopic systems subjected to external forcing exhibit complex spatiotemporal behaviors as result of dissipative self-organization. We consider a paradigmatic Swift-Hohenberg equation in both variational and nonvariational forms in two-dimensions.

The large-scale vegetation patterns observed in many arid regions are due to the existence of facilitative and competitive interactions that affect the communal development of plants. For the patterns to form, it is necessary that competitive interac

The stability of a circular localized spot with respect to azimuthal perturbations is studied in a prototype variational model, namely, a Swift–Hohenberg type equation. The conditions under which the circular shape of the spot undergoes an elliptic

We model the non-local dynamics of vegetation communities and interpret the formation of vegetation patterns as a spatial instability of intrinsic origin: the wavelength of the patterns predicted within the framework of this approach is determined by

Using the weakly nonlinear theory, we analyse the stability and relative stability of transverse patterns appearing in a passive Kerr cavity. We show that the hexagonal H0 structures are stable in the vicinity of the Turing bifurcation point. Numeric
