The solar system presents us with a number of planetary bodies with shallow atmospheres that are sufficiently Earth-like in their form and structure to be termed “terrestrial.” These atmospheres have much in common, in having circulations that ar

Inertia-gravity waves exist ubiquitously throughout the stratified parts of the atmosphere and ocean. They are generated by local velocity shears, interactions with topography, and as geostrophic (or spontaneous) adjustment radiation. Relatively litt

Modeling Atmospheric and Oceanic Flows
This chapter focuses on the "classical" thermally driven, rotating annulus system. It reviews the current state of understanding of the rich and diverse range of flow regimes that may be exhibited in thermal annulus experiments from the viewpoint of

We investigate the predictability of the thermally driven rotating annulus, a laboratory experiment used to study the dynamics of planetary atmospheres under controlled and reproducible conditions. Our approach is to apply the same principles used to

We have investigated the formation of jet scale meridional circulation cells on Jupiter in response to radiative and zonal momentum forcing. In the framework of semi-geostrophic theory, the meridional streamfunction is described by an elliptic equati

A combination of singular systems analysis and analytic phase techniques are used to investigate the possible occurrence in observations of coherent synchronization between quasi-biennial and semi-annual oscillations (QBOs; SAOs) in the stratosphere
