Toxoplasma gondii infection, like malaria, is sensitive to inhibition by artemisinin (ART). Mechanisms of action for ART in malaria treatment have been proposed, but little is known about its effects in T. gondii infection. To better understand its i

Both CD4+ and CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) are part of the human immune response to Toxoplasma gondii infection. To further our understanding of Toxoplasma immunity, we investigated factors influencing stimulation of CD4+ or CD8+ human T. gondi

Antigen-specific cytotoxic T cells (CTL) are generally elicited in vitro by incubation of effector cells with an appropriate major histocompatibility complex-matched antigen-presenting cell (APC). In the case of CTL derived from inbred rodents, splee

A 10-day-old infant with stridor was found to have herpes simplex virus type 2 infection of the larynx. The infant's poor clinical response to both acyclovir and foscarnet prompted extensive clinical and virologic evaluations, which revealed acyclovi

Giardia lamblia is dependent on the salvage of preformed purines and pyrimidines. This study investigated purine nucleoside and nucleobase transport utilizing rapid uptake determinations. Nucleoside substrate/velocity curves exhibited the hyperbolic

Two nucleosides related to the known antiprotozoal agent 1-(beta-D-ribofuranosyl)-1,5-dihydro-4H-pyrazolo-[3,4-d]pyrimidine-4-one (allopurinol riboside, 1) were prepared and evaluated against Leishmania donovani, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Trypanosoma ga

Methods are described for the synthesis of the α and β anomers of 7-D−ribofuranosylfuro[3,2-d]pyrimidines substituted at C-4 with either amino, oxo, thiono, or methylthio groups. The analogous 2,4-dithiono compounds are also described. The key st

The antimalarial compound qinghaosu (artemisinin) was tested in vitro for the ability to inhibit plaque formation by Toxoplasma gondii in fibroblasts. Qinghaosu at 0.4 microgram/ml for 5 days eliminated all plaques and microscopic foci of T. gondii.
