The enzyme porphobilinogen synthase (PBGS) catalyses the formation of porphobilinogen (PBG) from two molecules of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA). It has been claimed that the PBGS from Rhodobacter spheroides is able to form a mixed pyrrole, from one mol
