A series of model steels and commercial alloys from the IAEA Phase 3 irradiation programme was irradiated to a dose of 14 mdpa (∼ 9 x 10 22 n m -2 (E > MeV)) at 290°C. The steels were examined using small angle neutron scattering and a range of tr

In this paper we review the approach employed in the UK to characterise the embrittlement of thermal reactor pressure vessels (RPVs). The experimental techniques developed to characterise the neutron energy spectrum and fluence are described; these i

The results of the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) Surveillance Programme have attracted considerable interest amongst regulators and utilities because of their implications for, in particular, light water reactor (LWR) support structures operating
In recent years concerns have arisen regarding low temperature irradiation damage processes following the observation of an apparent tenfold increase in embrittlement in the HFIR reactor surveillance programme at Oak Ridge compared with accelerated m

Recent results on neutron-irradiated RPV submerged-arc welds have revealed grain boundary segregation of phosphorus during irradiation, which may lead to intergranular fracture. However, the experimental database is insufficient to define the depende

In this paper we review the advances in understanding ofmicrostructural evolution during irradiation in pressure vessel steels. A particular focus is the benefits that arise from combining microstructural techniques on characterising the microstructu

An apparatus has been developed to study the creep of thin metal specimens under tensile stress during bombardment by 4 MeV protons from the Harwell Van de Graaff Accelerator. The specimen is held in a helium atmosphere and the proton beam reaches it

Irradiation growth results are reported for annealed α-uranium at 373 K under 3.5 MeV proton bombardment. Two such experiments were performed at damage rates of 6.9 × 10−8 and 9.3 × 10 −8 dpa/s to doses of 0.0072 and 0.0077 dpa, respectively.

It is shown that creep strain transients can be adequately described by invoking anelastic strain contributions to both primary creep and unloading transients at all stress levels. Recourse to hypotheses based on internal stress is not necessary. The
