We summarize the latest advances in space-division multiplexing (SDM) for increasing the capacity per fiber strand. We discuss SDM fibers, recent SDM transmission experiments, subsystems suitable for SDM systems, as well as integrated components able

We numerically investigate pump-induced gain variations in eight-core fiber amplifiers. We compare two fibers with different erbium profiles by varying input power from −25 dBm to 0 dBm in one or four cores. Inter-core cross-gain modulation is < 0.

International audience; We derive in an integral form the BER for QPSK constellations corrupted by elliptic AWGN and discuss its properties compared to circular AWGN. Then we confront our theory with transmission experiments in configurations with el

Space-division multiplexing (SDM), whereby multiple spatial channels in multimode and multicore optical fibers are used to increase the total transmission capacity per fiber, is being investigated to avert a data capacity crunch and reduce the cost p

We experimentally demonstrate a broadband nonlinear interaction between a data-modulated pump and an unmodulated probe occupying different spatial modes of a few-mode fiber. This nonlinear interaction is attributed to inter-modal cross-phase modulati

We present the theory for a novel low-loss mode coupler based on multiple Gaussian spots, which can selectively address all spatial and polarization modes of a few-mode fiber. Specifically, we show spot arrangements and how to construct them for few-

We transmitted five wavelength channels and six spatial and polarization modes over a 209-km-long hybrid few-mode fiber span. The fiber supports six spatial and polarization modes, and consists of a first section of large effective area depressed-cla

We report simultaneous transmission of six spatial and polarization modes, each carrying 40 Gb/s quadrature-phase-shift-keyed channels over 96 km of a low-differential group delay few-mode fiber. The channels are successfully recovered by offline DSP

We present the design and characterization of a cladding-pumped amplifier with erbium doping located in an annular region near the core. This erbium-doped fiber is proposed to reduce gain saturation, leading to smaller gain compression when compared
