Gross-energy-confinement times (${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{E}$) in the ISX-$A$ (Impurity Study Experiment) tokamak exceeded predictions of the usual empirical scaling relations. We attribute this performance to reductions of impurity radiation and magneto

An experiment to test beryllium as a limiter material has been performed in the ISX-B tokamak. One facet of the studies centred on characterizing impurity influxes and concentrations. The radiation from both low-Z (Be, C, N, O) and intermediate-Z (Ti

Rapid-scanning spectrometric techniques have permitted the determination of ion temperatures in ORMAK as a function of time during the discharge pulse for ORMAK plasma currents up to 180 kA. Emission spectra of hydrogen atoms are Doppler-broadened in

Angular distributions of elastically‐scattered protons, and of deuterons, tritons, and alpha particles from (p,d), (p,t), and (p,α) reactions are being measured with the internal 22‐Mev proton beam of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory 86‐in. c

A military surplus ``Snooperscope'' has been converted into a stroboscopic shutter for the study of plasma oscillations. Some modification of the surplus item plus the adaptation of commercially available electronic gear has given a device with which

A 5-kev d-c electron beam interacting with a plasma of deuterium yielded x-ray photons with energies up to 250 kev from the plasma region. An electron temperature of 32 kev and an electron density of 4 x 10/sup ''/ electrons cm/sup - 3/ are inferred

This paper discusses extensive experimental studies of the ionic sound waves predicted by Tonks and Langmuir. Self-excited oscillations have been observed both in magnetically supported plasma columns and in spherical discharge tubes. The fundamental

A steady state plasma in a magnetic field has been generated by an electron stream along magnetic field lines which passed through a neutral gas jet. Plasma turbulence was observed by a technique which removes the plasma ions without greatly disturbi

For several years, we have been empirically producing steady-state, mirror-confined hot-ion plasmas with ${T}_{i}\ensuremath{\approx}\mathrm{a}$ few keV and ${n}_{i}\ensuremath{\approx}\frac{{10}^{13}}{{\mathrm{cm}}^{3}}$. We describe here the ion-he
