For two stars (R UMi and RS Cyg) believed to behave chaotically, we demonstrate that nonlinear forecasting is possible over a time horizon of about a year and calculate their future light curves, verifiable after photometric measurements take place.

An analysis of the photometric observations of the light curves of the five large amplitude, irregularly pulsating stars R UMi, RS Cyg, V CVn, UX Dra and SX Her is presented. First, multi-periodicity is eliminated for these pulsations, i.e. they are

It is now practical for undergraduate students to carry out a laboratory exercise in which they determine an approximate age for the universe using their own data. Because of the wide availability and excellent performance of charge-coupled device ca

The light curves (time series of the radiated energy) of most large amplitude, pulsating stars such as the well known Cepheid stars are regular. However, a smaller group of variable stars that are located next to them in the Hertzsprung- Russell diag

A specialized image‐processing device, the video peak store, can be used to enhance significantly a variety of physics lecture demonstrations by combining information from many video frames into a single composite frame. The use of this technology

We have monitored the 22 GHz H2O maser line from 22 LPVs since 1987. All stars show highly variable water maser emission with most Miras having a phase lag of 0.3 phase between the water maser and optical emission. VX UMa appears to show variations a

The water maser spectra of V778 Cyg show periodic variations with the same period as the optical carbon star (P=302d). However, a phaselag of 0.23 is present. The central velocity of the features may show long term variability. The 22 GHz spectra of
