Extracts of the plant tumor-inducing organism Agrobacterium tumefaciens do not oxidize glucose directly to gluconic or to 2-ketogluconic acid. Such extracts contain an extremely active, cyanide-sensitive DPNH oxidase. TPNH oxidase shows little activi

The extracellular polysaccharide produced by Xanthomonas phaseoli has been purified and shown to be homogeneous by examination in the analytical ultra-centrifuge, by moving boundary electrophoresis, and by gradient precipitation with ethanol. Followi

Cultures of Agrobacterium tumefaciens grown on a synthetic medium containing glucose plus a pyrimidine produced a pyrimidine riboside with unusual chemical properties. This substance was isolated in crystalline form and identified as 5-ribosyluracil

By analysis of reaction mixtures containing D-xylose, adenosinetriphosphate, and cell-free sonic extracts of Pseudomonas hydrophila, evidence has been obtained for the formation of triose and hexose phosphate is under anaerobic conditions. The hexose

The minimal requirements for a synthetic medium capable of supporting adequate growth of Agrobacterium tumefaciens were found to be D-glucose, urea, phosphate, and magnesium salt. D-Ribose, D-fructose, and D-xylose could be used to replace D-glucose.

Techniques are described for lysing cells of the Gram-negative organism Xanthomonas phaseoli with lysozyme and with penicillin. In the presence of a supporting medium 'protoplasts' are formed which may be stabilized by the addition of magnesium ions

The characteristics of14C-valine uptake by Agrobacterium tumefaciens are described. Highly significant differences were observed with the non-tumorogenic strain IIBNV6and the tumorogenic strain IIBV7K.Resting cells of strain IIBNV6displayed an amino

Intact cells and cell-free extracts of the phytopathogenic organism Xanthomonas phaseoli have been shown to contain flavoprotein and the respiratory carriers: cytochrome b1, cytochrome a1, and cytochrome a2. The reduced forms of these respiratory pig
