Employing the Yb-L III XANES, YbCu 5 , YbCu 4 Ga, YbCu 3 Ga 2 and YbCu 3.5 Ga 1.5 were studied in the temperature range 25 K to 300 K. YbCu 5 and YbCu 4 Ga were studied at 300 K at pressures up to 175 kbar.
