The exhaust of heat and particles is an important challenge in future nuclear fusion devices. Here the authors report the use of carbon emission as indicator for plasma detachment in a tokamak and its real-time feedback control.

The flux fit method is used to self-consistently estimate the power deposition profile and heat transport profiles from temperature measurements originating from perturbative experiments with a modulated source. This Letter improves on this method by
