Methods of determining weak transmission stability boundaries are developed based on the strong controllability and observability properties of power systems. This theory has been previously applied to a dynamical model of the generators and network.

Weak transmission boundaries are shown to cause steady state and transient stability problems. The weak boundaries are defined by a loss of controllability property of the transient stability model. The loss of synchronism for fault contingencies can
