The frequency response of three superconductive niobium resonating circuits, formed by a Nb microstrip and a Nb tunnel junction, is measured and analyzed at frequencies above the superconducting gap frequency. The circuits are placed in a waveguide s

The resonances of integrated tuning stubs in combination with SIS (superconductor-insulator-superconductor) detectors are measured and calculated. The predicted resonances are compared with measurements of stubs integrated with Nb-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-N

The noise and gain of a heterodyne waveguide mixer using Nb/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3//Nb superconducting tunnel junctions were measured in the 400-500-GHz frequency range. Three different arrays of two junctions in series are analyzed. The minimum receiver n

A simple technique is described to fabricate submicron patterns in Nb films. Typical aspects are the use of a single layer PMMA mask and CF3Br as an etchant. Trenches with a width of less than 100 nm and very steep sidewalls have been obtained in a 2

The noise and gain of a heterodyne waveguide mixer employing Nb/Al2O3/Nb superconducting tunnel junctions with an on-chip integrated tuning element are measured and analyzed at 680-750 GHz and at 840 GHz. The lowest receiver noise temperatures are 40

The rf‐power dependence of the ac‐Josephson steps is measured at 720 GHz, using small area Nb tunnel junctions. This frequency is well above the gap frequency of Nb. The junction is placed in a waveguide, and connected to a superconducting stripl

Planar Nb-Nb Josephson Junctions (JJ's) have been developed to be used in submillimeter heterodyne mixers. Experimental mixing results show a System Noise Temperature around 1000 K with a best result of 800 K at an operating temperature of 1.5 K. Pre

Josephson junctions (JJ) mixers have been developped and in the millimeter (185-270 GHz) and in the sub-millimeter range (345 GHz, 1000 GHz). Pointcontact devices have shown the best noise temperatures (Tsys = 420 K at 230 GHz) but are unreliable for
