A new kind of anisotropic gel has been produced by photopolymerization of liquid crystal (LC) mixtures composed of monoacrylates, diacrylates and non-reactive conventional LC molecules. After polymerization, lightly cross-linked anisotropic polymer n

In liquid-crystal (LC) display devices, patterned electrodes are used to effect switching of molecular orientation within a pixel element, and thin layers of a material (typically a polymer) at the surfaces of the cell plates induce the liquid-crysta

Lightly cross-linked anisotropic networks with uniaxial and π/2 twisted orientations were produced by photopolymerization of monotropic mixtures containing liquid crystal mono and diacrylates. In this way the polymer backbone was immobilized and bec

A liquid crystal (LC) mixture containing reactive CH 2 =CHCOO(CH 2 ) 10 OPHCOOPhOCOPhO(CH 2 ) 10 OCOCH=CH 2 and nonreactive CH 3 (CH 2 ) 9 OPhCOOPhOCO * CHPhCH(CH 3 ) 2 chiral molecules was made. The mixture showed the ferroelectric chiral smectic C

Liquid crystalline mixtures of mono- and diacrylates were polymerized after macroscopic orientation of the molecules. Refractive indices of the mixtures were investigated both in the LC phase and after polymerization in the macroscopically oriented s

A novel system for inducing pretilt angles in liquid crystals (LC) was devised. For this purpose thin layers of a LC mixture containing diacrylate molecules were spun on glass plates covered with rubbed polyimide films. The layers were then photopoly

Anisotropic gels were produced by photopolymerization of an oriented liquid‐crystalline (LC) mixture containing LC diacrylates and conventional LC molecules. Gels produced in this way were clear and did not give rise to excess scattering of light.

This four-part series is concerned with thick multimolecular layers, termed “adsorption-entanglement layers”, which according to our observations develop during flow of high molecular weight polymer solutions along the solid surfaces defining the
