The fabrication and characterisation of two-dimensional photonic microstructures with a period of 190 nm exhibiting clear photonic bandgap effects is reported. We show that structures with near-perfect sixfold rotational symmetry are produced by elec

Using the weakly guiding approximation, and with the assumption that the non-linearities are sufficiently weak so as not to change the transverse mode profile, perturbation theory is used to derive simple expressions for evaluating the modal, or effe

Very few nonlinear optical materials are actually useful for high throughput all-optical devices. However, AlGaAs does satisfy all of the nonlinear optical figures of merit when used with photons of energy less than one half the semiconductor bandgap

The techniques of coupled-cavity modelocking and self-modelocking in which intensity-induced nonlinear effects are exploited have been reviewed for broad-band gain media. Particular emphases have been placed upon the archetypical colour-centre and ti

A significant enhancement in the mode locking of a KCl:Tl color-center laser has been observed when a length of optical fiber having positive group-velocity dispersion was incorporated within an external control cavity. Pulse durations of ~260 fsec w

The refractive nonlinearities due to bandfilling and the plasma effect in a multiquantum well buried heterostructure semiconductor waveguide under reverse bias are probed using self‐phase modulation techniques. Modeling of the self‐phase modulati

To be able to exploit these effects in a device, and hence to be able to evaluate its performance, we wish to understand the implications of the choice of device construction on the size of nonlinearity as well as other parameters such as background

We report measurements of quasi‐cw optical bistability in an InGaAs/InP multiple quantum well waveguide Fabry–Perot cavity at 1.47 μm wavelength. This operating wavelength is detuned from the band‐edge resonance by 0.07 μm, where an enhanced

Measurements have been made of the carrier lifetimes in MOCVD and MBE InGaAs quantum wells in a waveguide configuration using a CW probe and a picosecond pump at a wavelength of 1.5 mu m. Values in the range 4-7 ns were obtained for excitation densit
