Summary: Sulfoquinovose (SQ), the polar head group of sulfolipids essential for photosynthesis, is naturally abundant. Anaerobic Firmicutes degrade SQ through a transaldolase-dependent (sulfo-TAL) pathway, producing dihydroxypropanesulfonate (DHPS).
