The Large-aperture Experiment to detect the Dark Age (LEDA) was designed to measure the 21-cm signal from neutral hydrogen at Cosmic Dawn, $z \approx $15-30. Using observations made with the $\approx $ 200 m diameter core of the Owens Valley Long Wav

Total-power radiometry with individual meter-wave antennas is a potentially effective way to study the Cosmic Dawn ($z\sim20$) through measurement of sky brightness arising from the $21$~cm transition of neutral hydrogen, provided this can be disenta

While pulsars possess exceptional rotational stability, large scale timing studies have revealed at least two distinct types of irregularities in their rotation: red timing noise and glitches. Using modern Bayesian techniques, we investigated the tim

We report the first detection of a glitch in the radio pulsar PSR J0908$-$4913 (PSR B0906$-$49) during regular timing observations by the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) as part of the UTMOST project.

The star EPIC 249706694 (HD 139139) was found to exhibit 28 transit-like events over an 87 day period during the Kepler mission's K2 Campaign 15 (Rappaport et al. 2019). These events did not fall into an identifiable pattern and could not be explaine

Searches for optical transients are usually performed with a cadence of days to weeks, optimised for supernova discovery. The optical fast transient sky is still largely unexplored, with only a few surveys to date having placed meaningful constraints

This thesis presents instrumentation with which to measure the abundance of neutral hydrogen gas in the Universe. Measuring where the Universe’s hydrogen is, and tracing how its distribution evolves with time, holds the key to understanding how gal
