We present a derivation of the time averaged potential and kinetic energies for small-amplitude surface waves on a shear flow with constant vorticity. The effect of surface tension is also taken into consideration. It is demonstrated that the virial

International audience; Patterns formed by centimeter scale bubbles on the free surface of a viscous liquid are investigated in a cylindrical container. These bubbles emerge periodically at the surface and interact with each other in the central zone

Propagation of gravity-capillary surface waves on a background shear flow with a constant vorticity is studied and compared with the case when the background flow is uniform in depth. Under the assumption that the background flow gradually varies in

Experiments were carried out with eight different chars in a batch fluidized bed reactor. The combustion rate was determined by measuring the CO and CO2 concentrations in the flue gas. Four models were tested, but only two well described the combusti

Hydrodynamic surface waves propagating on a moving background flow experience an effective curved space-time. We discuss experiments with gravity waves and capillary-gravity waves in which we study hydrodynamic black/white-hole horizons and the possi

We discuss the behaviour of massive modes near a horizon based on a study of the dispersion relation and wave packet simulations of the Klein-Gordon equation. We point out an apparent paradox between two (in principle equivalent) pictures of black ho

We provide an experimental demonstration that the circular hydraulic jump represents a hydrodynamic white hole or gravitational fountain (the time-reverse of a black hole) by measuring the angle of the Mach cone created by an object in the "supersoni

Surface waves on a stationary flow of water are considered, in a linear model that includes the surface tension of the fluid. The resulting gravity-capillary waves experience a rich array of horizon effects when propagating against the flow. In some

In this letter, we study experimentally a viscous liquid curtain in an annular geometry. Gap and median radius can be varied in such a way that the base of the initially stationary cylindrical curtain is led to oscillate by decreasing the flow rate.
