We present a detailed study of KIC 2306740, an eccentric double-lined eclipsing binary system. Kepler satellite data were combined with spectroscopic data obtained with the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (WHT). This allowed us to determine precise

The observed masses, radii and temperatures of 60 medium- to long-period binaries, most of which contain a cool, evolved star and a hotter less-evolved one, are compared with theoretical models which include (a) core convective overshooting, (b)mass

Stellar systems consisting of multiple stars tend to undergo tidal interactions when the separations between the stars are short. While tidal phenomena have been extensively studied, a certain tidal effect exclusive to hierarchical triples (triples i

We have calculated the equilibrium properties of a star in a circular, equatorial orbit about a Super-Massive Black Hole (SMBH), when the star fills and overflows its Roche lobe. The mass transfer time scale is anticipated to be long compared with th
We construct models of spherically symmetric stars in which a central neutron star core is accreting material from an envelope (Thorne-Zytkow objects or TZOs). Core masses are allowed to grow by accretion from ∼0.5 to 2.0 M ⊙ and envelope masses

For me, and for many astrophysicists of my generation, Chandrasekhar’s book An Introduction to the Study of Stellar Structure was very important. I could not have done my PhD (1962–1965) without it. Much more recently (1998) I realized that I cou

There are a number of binaries, fairly wide and with one or even two evolved giant components, that do not agree very well with conventional stellar evolution: the secondaries are substantially larger (‘oversized’) than they should be because the

The multiplicities of stars, and some other properties, were collected recently by Eggleton & Tokovinin, for the set of 4559 stars with Hipparcos magnitude brighter than 6.0 (4558 excluding the Sun). In this paper I give a numerical recipe for constr
