A $\vee$-complement of a subgroup $H \leqslant \mathbb{F}_n$ is a subgroup $K \leqslant \mathbb{F}_n$ such that $H \vee K = \mathbb{F}_n$. If we also ask $K$ to have trivial intersection with $H$, then we say that $K$ is a $\oplus$-complement of $H$.

This paper was written as a tribute to Mario Petrich, a major figure in the history of semigroup theory. Publication is posthumous in view of his recent death.
The thematic term on “Semigroups, Algorithms, Automata and Languages” organized at the International Centre of Mathematics (Coimbra, Portugal) in May-July 2001 was the gathering point for researchers working in the field of semigroups, algorithms

Dowling and Rhodes defined different lattices on the set of triples (Subset, Partition, Cross Section) over a fixed finite group G. Although the Rhodes lattice is not a geometric lattice, it defines a matroid in the sense of the theory of boolean rep

Traditional talent identification and development programs have sought to identify and select the most promising children as athletes of the future, to provide them with specialised training and preparation for expert performance in sport from an ear

We extend, in significant ways, the theory of truncated boolean representable simplicial complexes introduced in 2015. This theory, which includes all matroids, represents the largest class of finite simplicial complexes for which combinatorial geome

High precision time series photometry from space is being used for a number of scientific cases. In this context, the recently launched CHEOPS (ESA) mission promises to bring 20 ppm precision over an exposure time of 6 hours, when targeting nearby br

We give a new perspective of the relationship between simple matroids of rank 3 and pairwise balanced designs, connecting Wilson's theorems and tools with the theory of truncated boolean representable simplicial complexes. We also introduce the conce

It is shown that the lattices of flats of boolean representable simplicial complexes are always atomistic, but semimodular if and only if the complex is a matroid. A canonical construction is introduced for arbitrary finite atomistic lattices, provid
