Summary: During hypoxia, increases in cerebral blood flow maintain brain oxygen delivery. Here, we describe a mechanism of brain oxygen sensing that mediates the dilation of intraparenchymal cerebral blood vessels in response to reductions in oxygen

The mechanism of neurovascular coupling ensures that the brain energy supply is sufficient to meet demand. Here the authors show that in this mechanism CO2 plays an important role in neuronal activity-dependent regulation of local brain blood flow.

Background & Aims: Increased plasma ammonia concentration and consequent disruption of brain energy metabolism could underpin the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Brain energy homeostasis relies on effective maintenance of brain oxygenati

Several mechanisms contribute to the maintenance of constant extracellular pH, essential for normal brain function. Here the authors show that astrocytes help to control local brain pH via a neuronal activity-dependent release of bicarbonate by the e

The brain receives 20% of cardiac output, but in accord with the current knowledge lacks a specialized sensor of its own blood flow. Here, the authors show that brain astrocytes detect drops in perfusion and trigger compensatory increases in arterial

Circuits of the preBötzinger complex generate rhythms needed for breathing. Here, the authors provide evidence, using a combination of chemogenetic approaches and approaches to inhibit vesicular release, that astrocytes play a role in regulating res

Synuclein (α, β, and γ) proteins are highly expressed in presynaptic terminals, and significant data exist supporting their role in regulating neurotransmitter release. Targeting the gene encoding α-synuclein is the basis of many animal models of
