A scheme for polarization dispersion compensation with reduced feedback is explored. Repeatable estimates of the PMD vector have been obtained from polarimeter measurements using various algorithms. Limitations due to higher-order PMD are discussed.

PMD is one of the critical hurdles in deploying high capacity fiber optical networks (OC-192 per channel and above). Due to its stochastic and time-varying nature, PMD compensation requires adaptive schemes, using feedback or feed-forward techniques.
