The isolation of a new triterpene, putranjivadione, is described. By a combination of chemical and physical methods it was shown that putranjivadione is friedelane-3,7-dione (I).

The structures IIIa and IVa suggested for putranjic and putranjivic acids respectively have been confirmed by the synthesis of methyl putranjivate (IVb) from friedel-3-ene (IX). Putranjic acid has been shown to have S -configuration (IIIa) at C 2 .

From the bark of Phyllanthus acidus Skeels the pentacyclic triterpenoids, phyllanthol and olean-12en-3β-ol (β-amyrin) have been isolated. The biosynthetic path of phyllanthol has been outlined.
