We present an approach for measuring thermal decomposition kinetics in crystalline solids using X-ray diffraction to track the loss of crystallinity that accompanies condensed phase decomposition chemistry. We apply this method to systems for which e

Inducing new phases in thick films via vertical lattice strain is one of the critical advantages of vertically aligned nanocomposites (VANs). In SrTiO3 (STO), the ground state is ferroelastic, and the ferroelectricity in STO is suppressed by the orth

Frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) is a common technique for measuring ultrashort laser pulses using an instantaneous, nonlinear-optical interaction as a fast time-gate to measure the pulse intensity and phase. But at high frequencies, material

We present hard x-ray-pump, optical-probe transient grating measurements. A split-and-delay line generates an interference pattern; subsequently an optical probe diffracts from the excited sample. Both the x-ray-x-ray delay and the x-ray-optical dela

Thin films of pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) were shock compressed using the laser driven shock apparatus at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Two spectroscopic probes were available to this apparatus: visible white light transient absorpti

We demonstrate an all-optical approach for measuring spectrograms of individual FEL pulses by measuring a spectrally-resolved EUV-EUV-optical four-wave-mixing signal. We experimentally demonstrate that this is phase-sensitive can be applied to struct

We demonstrate that with transient grating, ultraviolet pulse shapes can be encoded in near-infrared nonlinear optical signals, even in a non-instantaneous medium. We present measurements of chirped 400 nm pulses made in an absorbing medium.

SHOCK COMPRESSION OF CONDENSED MATTER - 2019: Proceedings of the Conference of the American Physical Society Topical Group on Shock Compression of Condensed Matter.
A detonation wave is a supersonic wave of chemistry, which in solid explosives, propagates across a material converting the initial bed of crystals into a high pressure fluid of product species within nanoseconds. A subsequent rapid expansion of the
