The requirements of a combined pulse photolysis/e.s.r. spectrometer system suitable for use in the measurement of lifetimes and concentrations of free radicals in solution are discussed. The design and operation of such a system are described and som

The photolytic decomposition of hexafluoroacetone has been studied over a wide range of temperatures and pressures using light of wavelength 3130 Å. The initial step involves the production of CF 3 radicals, and the only products are C 2 F 6 and CO.

The radiolysis of α-amino acids RCH(NH+3)COO– where R = H, CH3, CH2CH3, CH2COOH and CH3SO3H has been examined by e.s.r. methods. After γ-irradiation at 77°K the predominant e.s.r. spectrum observed at this temperature corresponds to the protonat

A study of the reactions of trifluoromethyl radicals, produced by the photolysis of hexafluoroacetone, with propane, n-butane, and isobutane has been made. The rate constants of the hydrogen-abstraction reactions have been determined at temperatures
