Changes in the freezing tolerance for Silene acaulis L., a subarctic and arctic species of circumpolar distribution, were examined to understand the extent of cold hardening and dehardening that occurs seasonally and with changes in plant phenology.

Changes in the physiology of plant leaves are correlated with enhanced freezing tolerance and include accumulation of compatible solutes, changes in membrane composition and behavior, and altered gene expression. Some of these changes are required fo
