The electrocaloric effect (ECE) of two compositions (x = 0.06 and 0.07) of (1 − x)(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-xKNbO3 in the vicinity of the morphotropic phase boundary is studied by direct measurements. ΔTmax = 1.5 K is measured at 125 °C under 70 kV/cm for

The first solid-state masers to operate at room-temperature and ambient air-pressure were recently demonstrated using optically pumped spin-triplet states as the gain medium. In this Perspective, we briefly review the previous state-of-the-art in cry

Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) of lead-free NBT-based ceramics are produced and their electrocaloric effect (ECE) is characterised for the first time. Dense MLCCs with 97μm-thick active layers are successfully produced by tape casting. Dielec

Titanium nitride (TiN) continues to prove itself as an inexpensive, robust, and efficient alternative to gold in plasmonic applications. Notably, TiN has improved hot electron-harvesting and photocatalytic abilities compared to gold systems, which we

The maser, older sibling of the laser, has been confined to relative obscurity due to its reliance on cryogenic refrigeration and high-vacuum systems. Despite this it has found application in deep-space communications and radio astronomy due to its u

Refractory transition metal nitrides and oxynitrides are of interest for plasmonic applications due to their increased thermal stability, tunability and comparatively low loss. Presented here is an experimental investigation of reactively sputtered n

A lead-free Aurivillius phase based on SrBi2(Nb0.2Ta0.8)2O9 was studied for potential application in electrocaloric (EC) cooling systems. Doping with praseodymium proved to be effective in reducing the temperature of maximum permittivity from about 3

Titanium oxynitride enables a range of plasmonic and optoelectronic functionality using long-lived photo-generated hot carriers. We explore the time scale of hot carriers in TiN and their use in photochemical reduction and Schottky detectors.
