BACKGROUND: Both hyperfibrinolysis and fibrinolysis shutdown can occur after severe trauma. The subgroup of trauma patients with fibrinolysis shut- down resistant to tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA)-mediated fibrinolysis have increased mortality.
