The measurement of ion temperatures from the Doopler broadening of spectral lines is discussed. Calculations are used to show that the shape of the instrument function of the spectrometer can have a significant effect on the measured value, even when

After five years of construction JET started its operation in June 1983. In December plasmas with peak currents of 3 MA were produced. Flat top times of a few seconds were obtained for currents of 2.4 MA. The plasmas were slightly elongated ( ~ 20%)

The bulk motion of the plasma in the Divertor Injection Tokamak Experiment (DITE) has been measured using the spectral shifts of impurity emission lines whose intensities are enhanced during H0 beam injection. Rotational speeds in the toroidal direct

A high-speed framing camera has been used to photograph deuterium and helium discharges in which flute instabilities are driven by the inertial force of a radial acceleration. The wavelength of the instability increases with decreasing initial pressu

In recent years there has been an increasing interest in the production of energetic plasmas at temperatures and densities relevant to the study of controlled thermonuclear reactions. Experiments of this type at AWRE Aldermaston use rapidly rising ax
