A hydrogen peroxide-resistant mutant of the catalase-negative microaerophile, Spirillum volutans, constitutively expresses a 21.5 kDa protein that is undetectable and non-inducible in the wild-type cells. Part of the gene that encodes the protein was

Autolytic activity in the soluble and sediment fractions of sonicates of the spiral and the coccoid form of Campylobacter upsaliensis could not be demonstrated by native (nondenaturing) polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). Autolysins were detec

A large spirillum was isolated from a freshwater pond in West Bengal. Its deoxyribonucleic acid base composition (51 mol% guanine + cytosine) and cell diameter (0.9 to 1.2 μm.) were similar to those of Aquaspirillum serpens and A. putridiconchylium.

Spirillum volutans responded aerotactically to self-created oxygen gradients in capillary tubes. Band formation required an oxidizable substrate, inorganic ions, and a chelating agent. The higher the respiratory rate, the faster the band migrated. Ra

The microaerophilic nature of Campylobacter fetus has complicated its recovery from human and animal sources. In this study, modifications of brucella agar and broth were tested for enhancement of growth and aerotolerance of 64 strains of C. fetus, r
