Free-space optical communications links have the perpetual challenge of coupling light from free-space to a detector or fiber for subsequent detection. It is especially challenging to couple light from free-space into single-mode fiber (SMF) in the p

We report on the fabrication of multi-core multi-mode fibers tailored for optics communications applications. Examples of passive graded index fiber and active Er-doped multi-mode and multi-core fibers for ultra-high-density SDM will be discussed.

We discuss monolithic integration of a 100-channel AWG with a 10-GHz channel spacing with 100 Michelson-interferometer-based phase- and amplitude-modulators. The AWG showed approximately 10 dB crosstalk, and the twin-integrated devices comprise a 2

We report that completely athermal design of a slotted silicon waveguide is possible by combining the negative thermo-optic (TO) coefficient of, for example, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) with the positive TO coefficient of silicon. When used in a m
