In this paper we introduce the DCT-GIST image representation model which is useful to summarize the context of the scene. The proposed image descriptor addresses the problem of real-time scene context classification on devices with limited memory and
This paper presents an approach for generating class-specific image segmentation. We introduce two novel features that use the quantized data of the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) in a Semantic Texton Forest based framework (STF), by combining toget

This chapter presents two case studies showing how the proposed approach applies to smart system design and optimization. The former is the virtual prototyping platform built for a laser pico-projector actuator, where MEMS, analog and digital compone

When a picture is shot all the information about the distance between the object and the camera gets lost. Depth estimation from a single image is a notable issue in computer vision. In this work we present a hardware and software framework to accomp

This paper describes new methods for errors handling at the decoder side, when channel noise affects the transmission of the compressed stream. The proposed error detection techniques are applied to MPEG-4 standard video, but can be also used for gen

In this paper, we propose a low complexity smile detection technique, able to detect smiles in a variety of light conditions, face positions, image resolutions. The proposed approach firstly detects the faces in the image, then applies almost cost-fr

Red eye artifact is caused by the flash light reflected off a person’s retina. This effect often occurs when the flash light is very close to the camera lens, as in most compact imaging devices. To reduce these artifacts, most cameras have a red ey

In this paper we disclose a technique for reducing colored noise from images, working in the YCrCb domain. This algorithm takes advantage of the device parameters, modulating the strength of the denoising filter according to the exposure time. Moreov
