An amorphous, aluminosilicate-based mineral has been dissolved in acidic water and water–ethanol solutions, respectively, for subsequent use as a binder for inorganic fiber mats. In this communication, the focus is put on the stability of the sols

A low biopersistence of man-made vitreous fibres (MMVFs) has often been related to a high in-vitro dissolution rate at near-neutral pH. For some fibre types, however, a low in-vivo biopersistence cannot be explained by the in-vitro dissolution rate i

Measurements are presented of the dissolution rates in neutral pH simulated lung (SLF) of several man-made vitreous fibers (MMVF) and crocidolite asbestos that were recently in chronic rodent inhalation studies. The measured dissolution rate depended

An attempt has been made to identify the structural elements in binary lithium, sodium, potassium and cesium silicate melts by voltammetry. In the lithium melts g-SiO2 or quartz-like clusters are proposed, although other interpretations are possible.

A striking similarity is obtained between the structure of binary silicate melts and the Qn distribution in the corresponding glasses. The former are deduced from voltammetric measurements, the latter from published Raman and NMR data. A closer analy
