Microalgae can serve as a carbon sink for CO2 sequestration and as a feedstock for liquid biofuel production. Methods for microalgal biomass and biofuel cultivation are progressing, but are still limited in the efficiency of light delivery and gas ex

Modular robotic systems typically assemble using deterministic processes where modules are directly placed into their target position. By contrast, stochastic modular robots take advantage of ambient environmental energy for the transportation and de

In this work we develop a method for fluid dynamically driven assembly in three dimensions and demonstrate its applicability to the development of programmable matter. Towards this end, we investigate docking of a single block onto a larger structure

Microalgae are a promising feedstock for sustainable biofuel production. At present, however, there are a number of challenges that limit the economic viability of the process. Two of the major challenges are the non-uniform distribution of light in

Utilization of evanescent fields for photosynthetic bacteria to produce biofuel can lead to thousandfold decrease in the volume of photobioreactors. We demonstrate the growth of bacteria enabled by the evanescent excitation using planar waveguides.

Stochastic self-reconfiguring robots are modular robots that possess the ability to autonomously change the arrangement of their modules and do so through the use of non-deterministic processes. We present a concept for a robotic system in which the

In this work we describe our development of fluidic assembly of 3D blocks as an approach to achieving programmable matter. Devices made of this matter are assembled from small building blocks, and their shape and function can be reconfigured on deman
