International audience; In the search for ever higher output power or energy from fibre oscillators or amplifiers a nowadays mature technology relies on enlarging the fibre mode area. Broadening of the core diameter, all other things being equal, ine

Very large-mode-area Yb(3+)-doped single-mode photonic bandgap (PBG) Bragg fiber oscillators are considered. The transverse hole-burning effect is numerically modeled, which helps properly design the PBG cladding and the Yb(3+)-doped region for the h

In this paper, we propose, through different theoretical examples of composite fibre designs, some alternative ways to push up the limits of active optical fibres. Highly ytterbium-doped large cores are required for high power delivery and low non li

Three-dimensional modeling of modal competition in fiber lasers is presented. The numerical model is used to design a large mode area active fiber laser in which high order modes' suppression is wavelength insensitive.

Although singlemode fiber lasers become a mature technology, enhancements, in terms of output power, spatial beam quality, bend insensitivity are still required. A major trend is to increase the active core area to increase the thresholds of nonlinea

The delivery or generation of high power in optical fibre requires the increase of the core size to increase the threshold of nonlinear effects and the damage threshold. However the bend loss strongly limits the increase of the effective area (A eff

Photonic bandgap fibers have already proved their huge potential for guiding light in air over kilometric lengths. Nowadays, solid-core bandgap fibers draw considerable attention due to their unusual properties. For instance, the bandgap effect may l
