Hard coatings are commonly applied in severe cutting applications, where significant heat is generated. Thus, their thermal conductivity should be kept low to provide a heat barrier to the substrate and consequently to increase the service life time

The addition of Ta to Ti1−xAlxN hard coatings has been proven to be a promising strategy to enhance their properties, consequently leading to superior performance of coated cutting tools. Within this work, tribological properties and oxidation beha
