In this work, we present numerical methods appropriate for parameter estimation in high-dimensional statistical modelling. The solution of these problems is not unique and a crucial question arises regarding the way that a solution can be found. A co

In this paper, we study estimates for quadratic forms of the type xTA−mx, m∈N, for symmetric matrices. We derive a general approach for estimating this type of quadratic form and we present some upper bounds for the corresponding absolute error.

Face recognition and identification are very important applications in machine learning. Due to the increasing amount of available data, traditional approaches based on matricization and matrix PCA methods can be difficult to implement. Moreover, the

In many real world problems it is of interest to ascertain which factors are most relevant for determining a given outcome. This is the so-called variable selection problem. The present paper propo...
The aim of variable selection is the identification of the most important predictors that define the response of a linear system. Many techniques for variable selection use a constrained least squares ( LS ) formulation in which the constraint is imp

The solution of the penalized least squares problems depends on a tuning parameter. A popular tool for specifying the tuning parameter is the generalized cross-validation (GCV). In this work, we ut...

For large scale problems, the explicit computation of the inverse of a given matrix has high computational complexity and therefore a crucial problem is its efficient approximation. In this work, we present a readily implementable procedure for appro

This work proposes a fast estimate for the generalized cross-validation function when the design matrix of an experiment has correlated columns. The eigenvalue structure of this matrix is used to derive probability bounds satisfied by an appropriate
We consider the computation of generalized inverses of the graph Laplacian for both undirected and directed graphs, with a focus on the group inverse and the closely related absorption inverse. These generalized inverses encode valuable information a
