Abstract Raman spectroscopy enables the non-destructive characterization of chemical composition, crystallinity, defects, or strain in countless materials. However, the Raman response of surfaces or thin films is often weak and obscured by dominant b

Typically, magnetic phenomena result from the spontaneous order of the sublattices. Here, the cross-talk of two magnetic ions gives rise to an intrinsic, yet non-spontaneous ordering and manifests as emergent strong spin–phonon coupling in SmFeO3.

In h-RMnO3, the linear magnetoelectric effect is symmetry forbidden. Here, the authors show a pronounced magnetoelectric coupling driven by superexchange interaction giving rise to types of topological defects like magnetoelectric domain walls and vo

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) has recently been under focus for its potential use in photocatalysis thanks to its well-suited absorption edge in the visible light range. Here, we characterize the optical absorption of a BiVO4 single crystal as a function

Collective rotations and tilts of oxygen polyhedra play a crucial role in the physical properties of complex oxides such as magnetism and conductivity. Such rotations can be tuned by preparing thin films in which dimensionality, strain, and interface

Soft modes are intimately linked to structural instabilities and are key for the understanding of phase transitions. The soft modes in ferroelectrics, for example, map directly the polar order parameter of a crystal lattice. Driving these modes into

A new metastable phase in flash-frozen disordered Prussian blue analogues is reported. The phase is characterised by the appearance of diffuse scattering clouds and the reduction of the local structure symmetry: from cubic to a tetragonal or lower sp

Systems with long-range order like ferromagnetism or ferroelectricity exhibit uniform, yet differently oriented three-dimensional regions called domains that are separated by two-dimensional topological defects termed domain walls. A change of the or
