A generalized assessment of the functions of 26 genes of SP82G, a bacteriophage of Bacillus subtilis , has been made. The production of phage-specific deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), DNA-filled phage heads, completed phage particles, phage-specific anti

The stability of SP82G bacteriophage deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) after its uptake by competent Bacillus subtilis was examined by determining the ability of superinfecting phage particles to rescue genetic markers carried by the infective DNA. These e

The last genetic markers to be transferred during bacteriophage SP82G infection have a higher sensitivity to the decay of incorporated radioactive phosphorous ( 32 P) than those which are located on the proximal end of the genome. If 32 P decay is pe

Recombination between transfecting SP82G DNA molecules has been studied in Bacillus subtilis. Recombinant progeny issuing from transfected cells show many of the features that characterize progeny production in multiplicity reactivated bacteriophage,

Analysis, by the recovery of specific genetic “markers,” of the effects of DNase I, physical shear, and temperature shock on DNA-cell complexes demonstrates that sequential attachment of both ends of bacteriophage SP82G DNA to Bacillus subtilis p

The total nuclease activity of cell extracts of B. subtilis was characterized and shown to decrease following infection with bacteriophage SP82G. This inhibition was maximal at 6 minutes after infection at 37° and 9 minutes after infection at 33°.

An in situ assay for detection of alkaline nuclease activities has been adapted to the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) system. Six major nuclease activities which migrate with molecular weights of 90 000, 85 000, 80 000, 76 000, 71 000 and 65 000

A two-dimensional zymogram procedure for the analysis of nucleases is described. Isoelectric focusing (IEF) and nonequilibrium pH gradient electrophoresis (NEPHGE) were compared as first dimensions in combination with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) ele
