The classical Butler equation used to describe surface tension and the surface composition of liquid mixtures is revisited. A straightforward derivation is presented, separating basic chemical thermodynamics and assumptions proper to Butler's model.

Different definitions for the partial molar surface area (PMSA) of a mixture component are found in the literature. The advanced definition states that it is the change of surface area resultant from the addition of 1 mol of that component to the sur

Water plays an important role in N719 sensitization of ZnO films for application as photoanodes in DSC devices. The role of water content in ethanolic N719 sensitization solutions was examined resorting to N719-solvent interaction studies based on Ka

The molar surface area, Am, has been a neglected property of liquid mixtures. Here its role as a surface probe over different liquid mixture regions is exposed. A thermodynamic approach to Am calculation of planar binary liquid mixtures is developed.

Phenolic acids have been associated to a wide range of important health benefits underlain by a common molecular mechanism of action. Considering that significant membrane permeation is prevented by their hydrophilic character, we hypothesize that th

The kinetics of hydrolysis of methyl paraben (methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, MP) by NaOH has been proposed as a reference system to calibrate the effective volume (Veff) of flow-calorimetry vessels that are often used in studies of living cells. This para

The different shapes of surface tension isotherms consistent with Butler’s ideal model for the planar surface phase of binary liquid mixtures are comprehensively worked out for the first time. Using the ratio of pure constituent molar surface areas

The standard molar enthalpy of the base catalysed hydrolysis of methyl paraben, Δ r H m o , was obtained at 298.02 K, 303.04 K and 310.01 K. The determination relied on isothermal microcalorimetry measurements and on a thermochemical scheme that, in

Quercetin impact on lipid bilayers suggests a dual action mechanism at cell membranes. This widespread polyphenol displays high partition with low interference in the more fluid membrane domains, more vulnerable to oxidative attack, but strong pertur
