This classic experiment has been largely ignored by modern text book authors. It is worth reviewing for historical reasons and also because it provides a simple yet striking example of the role of group velocity in interferometry.

On the assumption that a hologram is a superposition of zone plates, one from each point in the object, the authors have produced, by sequential printing of zone plates, holograms which reconstruct a pattern of several bright points on a dark field.

It is known that when a converging, monochromatic, spherical wave is diffracted at a circular aperture, the point of maximum intensity may not be at the geometric focus of the incident wave, but may be located closer to the aperture. In the present n

Some of the optical properties of biaxial crystals are reviewed. Particular attention is given to the shapes of the wave surfaces and to the fact that true conical refraction cannot be observed.

A simple approach is presented to the problem of Fresnel diffraction by an uniform half plane of arbitrary transmission and phase delay. A simple extension of the Cornu spiral allows this graphical device to provide a ready solution for this situatio

A study was made to determine the absolute value of the absorption coefficient for lithium fluoride between 10 and 110 ev. The first exciton level in the fundamental absorption was found to be at 12.9 ev. Absorption structure attributed to the fluori

A method is presented for determining the location and magnification of images formed by holographic reconstruction. The method is based upon the similarity between a hologram and a zone plate. An undergraduate student familiar with introductory opti

Some elementary experiments in geometrical and physical optics, usually limited to individual observations in the laboratory, can be adapted for presentation to larger groups as lecture or classroom demonstrations, by making use of the gas laser as l
