We discuss the design and performance of multiwire proportional counters working as “proportional mode counters”. An array of 511 of these counters was used to record the densities of particles near to the core of PeV air showers.

We have searched the data set of the SUGAR cosmic ray detector for indications of emission above 10 17 eV from two binary X-ray sources, Vela X-ray sources, Vela X-1 and LMC X-4. There is no indication of a signal from Vela X-1 and an upper limit on

The full set of data obtained by the Sydney University giant airshower recorder (SUGAR) has been reanalysed to take into account the effects of afterpulsing in the photomultiplier tubes. Event data have been used to produce a spectrum of 'equivalent

The authors give the results of a two-year study of the cosmic-ray air-shower density spectrum at sea level. The experiment confirms the steepening of the spectrum at densities around 400 particles/m2 and suggests that the spectrum flattens again at

We discuss the design and performance of a small cosmic ray air shower array which will provide a trigger for an array of closely packed multiwire proportional counters (under construction). The array uses eight plastic scintillation counters connect

The Sydney giant air shower array has been in operation now for approximately five years. The authors analyse the first 10000 showers observed and derives a muon size and total energy spectrum. The area time product involved for these data is about 1

The results of an experiment to study the strongly interacting particles in air shower cores are presented. The experiment used 64 large plastic scintillators in three different close configurations, two Wilson cloud chambers, about 600 G-M counters

Since February 1957 observations have been in progress in Sydney on extensive air showers of lO/sup 5/ to lO/sup 7/ particles. The following measurements are currently being made: (a) determination of shower size and core location, (b) directions of
