A brief description of the Durban atmospheric LIDAR (acronym for light detection and ranging) system for the measurement of vertical temperature profiles is presented. In its original configuration, a 10 Hz-laser was used as the transmitter for the L

Significant advances have been made over the last decade to improve the performance, efficiency, and contrast of high peak and average power laser systems, driven by their use in a wide variety of fields, from the industrial to the scientific. As the

The lens is a well-understood optical component used for focusing light, but is almost exclusively made in the solid-state form and, thus, suffers from optical damage at high powers. Attempts to overcome this through the use of non-solid graded-index

When a large piece of space debris forced a change of flight plan for arecent U.S. Space Shuttle mission, the concept that we are trashing space as well as Earth finally attained broad public awareness. Almost a million pieces of debris have been gen

In this paper we characterize the behavior of a new pulsed gas lens, the colliding shock lens. We show how input energy, electrical diameter, number of discharge electrodes, and enclosing the discharges, affect its optical aperture and focal length.

Magnetic pucks on an air table create a two dimensional ‘‘gas.’’ The pucks are accelerated around a race track forming a strong shock and a rarefaction wave. The shock density reaches the limit given by the Rankine Hugoniot equations. A shock

It is not often that a new form of transportation suddenly appears and replaces what was hitherto regarded as mankind's only realistic option. In space and upper atmosphere transportation, chemical rockets have held center stage for over half a centu

The principle of tensional as opposed to compressional vacuum vessels is reviewed. Proof of principle experiments is performed. Conceptual extensions of the idea, the inflatable vacuum chamber, the lightweight or even weightless chamber, are proposed

We show how a varifocal pulsed gas lens, the colliding shock lens, can be used as an intracavity element to Q switch a ruby laser. By placement of the shock lens in tandem with a second lens, a giant pulse is obtained. The second lens may be a conven
