This study presents basic information on the life cycle, seasonal phenology, and parasitism of the endemic Hawaiian moth Udea stellata (Butler) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a species for which little biological information is available, even though it w

Five economically important species of the family Proteaceae were investigated to determine which leaf characteristics possibly contributed to deterring insect herbivory. The presence of phenolic compounds such as tannins in the leaves of all five pl

Summary Low seed-set of South African Proteaceae was investigated as a granivore evasion strategy. Only a slight decrease in fertile:non-fertile seed ratios with increasing levels of granivory was found, indicating that insects feed non-selectively.

Novel far-infrared optically detected cyclotron resonance (FIR-ODCR) techniques are used to investigate GaAs epilayers and the results are compared with conventional cyclotron resonance performed at far-infrared frequencies and ODCR at microwave freq

For the first time optically detected cyclotron resonance (ODCR) has been demonstrated using a CO2 pumped far-infrared (FIR) laser instead of microwaves. Both the electron and the light-hole cyclotron resonances have been observed in GaAs, as well as

The black twig borer, Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) attacks >200 species of plants. This ambrosia beetle occurs on all the major islands of Hawaii and is a threat to some native plants and coffee plantations

The kinematics of the wrist and a manipulated object were studied in a posting task in 30 control, eight hemiplegic and 10 diplegic children. Statistical analyses using 'mixed' models examined the effects of subject group, hand, object shape and repe

A shape-posting task was studied in 30 control, eight hemiplegic and 10 diplegic children, to determine how differences in object manipulation between such children could be quantified. Conical, cylindrical and triangular-shaped objects were posted t
